I remember having an exciting thought the first night I slept in my own space after being independent of my parents. "Why don't I put in a pretty curtain that I chose and a lighting device that looks good? And let's have a pajama party with my friends at the end of the year." However, the reality was quite different from the dream. In the cold winter, the temperature difference from the outside is severe, so from the moisture on the wall, the kitchen and the room are not separated, and the smell of the room was full on the day when even one fish was grilled. Fortunately, I moved to another house now, but the hard memories of that time still remain hurt(?). Ju-young Kang, CEO of Studio CISO, who met today, also said that he had a similar experience as a child. I met her who designs a space that is easy and comfortable for people to live in and a space containing the dreams and wishes of members.
#Design I COOP, which pursues design led by designers!
▲ Ju-young Kang, CEO of Studio CISO
Q. Please introduce yourself.
Hello, I'm Kang Joo-young, chairman of the Design I Cooperative and CEO of Studio CISO. When I was young, I lived near Jam-sil. Perhaps because the houses on that side were built in a hurry, it was too cold and uncomfortable. So since then, I have dreamed of building a house that is comfortable and cozy for people to live in. I majored in consumer housing at university and worked in indoor architecture and design for about 15 years after graduation. But I was not happy while doing what I liked because I had a lot of work and was strong intensity. So I thought about how to balance work and life. Eventually, I opened a company called Studio CISO that mainly designs space.
Q. Did you create a form of cooperative with other companies because of that concern?
I didn't know from the beginning that it was a cooperative, and I didn't mean to create it. At first, the studio seesaw was made together with friends, but some of my colleagues left because I didn't make much profit in the early stages. In the meantime, I heard from freelance designers who work with me that they are capable and willing to work, but they are raising children, so it is difficult to get a job at another company. I realized that even if they tried to create a company they wanted, the cost or effort would be doubled or tripled. In other words, there is definitely a limit to what you can do alone and it costs a lot. Therefore, it was concluded that we should gather together, share resources, and grow our work together. I belatedly learned that it was the concept of cooperation.
Q. You said you were working on the project together, so please explain it in detail.
Design I Cooperative is a cooperative of companies that design space and sight and belongs to six workplace cooperatives. Companies that design space or architecture include Studio CISO, Dyne Co., Ltd., and S+p aid. Companies that mainly do visual design include communication design, Banco Art Co., Ltd., and Nanu Co., Ltd. Most of the contents of the project progress are in the protocol. It varies slightly from project size to project size. For example, if the Seoul Jobs (customer) needs to build a new office building this time is A, B, and C, it will announce when the relevant meeting will be held and decide which company will be in charge of the project at the meeting. In other words, Seoul Jobs (customer) and our cooperative sign an external contract, and internally, the cooperative sign a separate contract with each individual member for each task.
Q. What projects have you been working on recently?
I am designing a house where my college senior family will live. Studio CISO was in charge of the architectural design of the house, and Dyne Co., Ltd. was in charge of reviewing the frame, structure, and other related laws. As the senior couple continued to live in an apartment, they said they were upset because they scolded the 5-year-old youngest not to run around every day. If they move into a house this time, they will be much less likely. I want to make a house where my family's small wishes and dreams are melted. In fact, this design is needed more for those who are in financial difficulties. For example, if the packaging of the product is beautiful while doing business, it will sell much better. But such a design costs a lot of money, so it's harder to access. Therefore, we design it in the form of talent donation for a minimum labor cost. Last year, I made packages and promotional materials for products made at a sales protection facility for the disabled in Seoul.
Q. What is the value that Studio CISO pursues?
Design management, led by designers, is pursued. Design is sold commercially rather than pure art, so it is natural that the customer's intention should be clearly expressed. However, the customer doesn't have to hold and shake the entire design and follow everything according to their taste.
Not long ago, at the request of a company to create a "space design that is not in the world," our design was selected through PT with other companies. However, I was able to proceed with the work after the company's payment. As a result, it becomes a common design that can be seen anywhere. I think these parts must be changed. Since commercial design is shared by an unspecified number of people, I think there should be a story rather than just pretty, and I want to create a circular structure where designers can take the lead in implementing it well.
#What kind of people and environment do you work in?
▲ The view of Studio CISO's office where we will work together
Q. Please tell me about the number of people.
Studio CISO is working with the CEO (me) and freelance designers. And in the case of other companies, there are about 1 to 3 people per company, so in total, there will be about 15 people, and most of them are in their 40s. So I think it will be difficult for new employees who have no social experience to work together. Even if it's not a space design, I hope anyone who has two to three years of social experience and wants to learn this field anew will join us.
Q. Is democratic decision-making made because it is a form of cooperative?
Well, I often make decisions arbitrarily (smile).
What I mean is that formally, all members of the union can execute the same one vote, and the board of directors holds once a month and the general meeting twice a year.
Since there are not many members, we often share announcements through mobile messengers.
But in fact, I don't think the atmosphere of the union members actively expressing their opinions or working together has yet to be established. I think it would be better if there were too many opinions.
Q. Tell me the chairman's daily routine.
Most of the time, I have meetings outside in the morning, but if I come to the office, I go to work at 9:30. At 11:30, we eat at the cafeteria on the 8th floor, and for your information, lunch is supported.
I start working in the afternoon from 12:30 p.m. and usually get off work around 9 p.m.
I tried to balance work and life, but sometimes when I have a lot of work, I think I shouldn't have opened a business (smile). In addition, in the case of working mothers, they plan to adjust their salaries and working hours so that they can work and childcare at the same time. If you are passionate and interested in this field, I hope you don't worry about it and apply. Another good thing is that there are sleeping rooms, showers, and fitness rooms exclusively for female employees in the company building, so you can use them as much as you want.
Q. After completing the project, I heard you're taking a vacation.
Basically, you can use both legal annual leave and parental leave. I had a meeting with a customer today, and sometimes I ask, "Can I work by tomorrow?" There are people who want to receive the results the day after the meeting. Therefore, you often work overtime or stay up all night, so you must take a break after the project. It depends on the project, but I've usually rested for three days or as long as seven days. However, there are many important meetings on Mondays, so I hope you don't use your menstrual leave for Monday.

Q. Is there a reason why you participated in this "JOBDongsan"?
Not only Studio CISO but also Design I Cooperative's companies each have more than 10 years of experience in their fields. Nevertheless, since it's a new beginning stage, they're anxious to work together, and they actually have a lot of work (smile). So I was thinking about how to find someone to work with in the future, and I found out about "Japdongsan," and I thought this was it. If you are a person who actively finds what to do in the future, you will definitely have passion and have a clear direction for what you want to do. I think we are looking for colleagues who can grow together as cooperatives grow, not employees.
Q. What kind of job does the hired designer usually take?
Depending on the annual leave or career, the designer's job is a little different. If you are an manager, you will play the role of a project manager and decide on the concept and arrangement of the entire direction or space of the project together. If you are a designer with an annual leave below that, you will take on a different role in consultation with me. If you don't have any experience, you'll usually finish the project, such as coloring the finished drawings.
Q. What specifications are needed?
Above all, you should have a clear sense of goal in this field. Since the TV program Love House was launched in the past, I've seen many people who chose this field just because it was "cool." However, it is difficult to grow in this field without a clear goal because of the strong work intensity. And I don't think education is really important. For example, I hope the applicant is a person who graduated from design high school, knows how to handle design tools, or has some basic knowledge because he has a lot of books related to design.
Q. What are the pros and cons of this job?
Should I say that the beginning and end of the work are not clear? I think the hardest thing is that there is no fixed answer. But I think that could come as an advantage. I'm really proud to see what I planned myself actually completed. A few years ago, I designed a space for daycare centers in the company, but the company kept trying to reduce the cost.
Q. What should the applicant pay attention to in the cover letter and portfolio?
We will proceed with document screening and interview screening.
I would like the applicant to write what the most impressive humanities book in the cover letter is and why. Designers should have strong thinking power and be able to express their thoughts in design. To be proud of what I made, you have to have your own philosophy and beliefs in it.
I hope you can explain why you designed it, not just making a good design.
And I'm thinking of having them fill out the MBTI questionnaire during the interview, but I hope you think it's to see if you can create synergy by working with existing people.
